Official MFA Spokesperson Counselor Ahmed Abu Zeid stated that at the beginning of the meeting, FM Shoukry listened to First VP Gai's extensive evaluation of the political and security situation in his country. Gai asserted that the government of South Sudan is especially interested in continuing on the path of national dialogue and aspires to Egypt's technical and political support for the dialogue. He, also, reviewed the outcomes of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)'s Peace revitalization Forum, which he thinks did not yet achieve significant progress to resolve the crisis in South Sudan. In addition, negative implications on South Sudan's stability are expected as a result of some UN Security Council members moving to impose sanctions on his country's government holding it responsible for the continuation of the political crisis between the government and the armed opposition.
From his side, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry relayed to First VP Gai President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi's greetings to President Salva Kiir Mayardit. FM Shoukry expressed the President's appreciation of the existing cooperation relations between the two countries and the desire to support and develop it in all fields; especially, the fields of education, agriculture, and healthcare. Abu Zeid noted Shoukry's emphasis during the meeting on Egypt's support for South Sudan in achieving peace and security through the initiative to unite the Sudan People's Liberation Movement and the country's national dialogue. Shoukry, further, noted Egypt's support for South Sudan during its 2016-2017 non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council, as well as, its current membership of the African Union's Peace and Security Council.
The MFA Spokesperson added that the meeting, also, addressed the political and security situation in East Africa and the Horn of Africa region. The two sides exchanged their evaluations and emphasized the importance of supporting stability for the interest of all the people of the region.
